Infroduction and Review of Events
since the last Thought Bombs, published last August 23rd (my
father's birthday) many things have ranspired, personally and
polifically and quite often, both. So now. I'll touch on some of it.
On September 9th, my friend Richard M. Flood, was given a brutal
fen year sentence in *Dirly Dan" Rozak's courfroom, in Joliet. His
“crime" was defending his wife from an assault by three lost soul
crackheads at a gas sfation in the nearby village of Crefe. At one
point, after several hundred days in Will County Jail the prosecutors
offered him a "deal” that if he pled "guilly” he would be sentenced
fo fime served and thus, be freed by Christmas, 2001. He refused,
because he wasn't guilty. He and his wife Rebecca, have five
feenaged children. This war is directed against American families!
This judge is noforious for comuption and harsh senfences. He.
wanted to railroad Richard because he had been a poliical
prisoner and jailhouse lawyer for many years in the llinois guiag
system. He helped to write the original writs that led fo the eventual
release of two of the now seventeen exonerated deathrow prisoners
i llinois. He'd helped many prisoners and organized study groups
fo polilicize his brothers, wherever he was. At the end, he was sent
1o Tamms, the monstrous Supermax dungeon in southe llinols.
Upon his release (only the fhird Tamms prisoner released alivel) he
re-estabiished his family connections, got a job s a union ironworker
and quickly became a foreman of a crew responsible for building
Chicago's world-famous skyscrapers. He never missed one day of
work, the whole fime he was “free.” After work, he volunteered with
John Santana'’s organization, Mr. Malo (Managing Resources fo
Make Avaliable Life's Opportunities) which s an exemplary example
of love and concem for community, in acfion. They help mentor,
quide and empower, mostly Latino youth fo franscend the street life,
avoid prison and actualize their particular gitfs, for themselves, their
families and their community. Richard was particularly listened fo by
these kids, as he had been fhere, done fhat and has a unique ability
1o relate poiitical reality to their siruggling lives. Plus, he has an
infectious personality, full of courage, humor and insight.

In October, Chicago ABC organized a prisoner support rally and
rmarch on October 20th, at the world-renown urban concentration
‘camp, known as Cook County Jail. Rebecca Flood spoke about
Richard's case and read a statement from him. One of their
children, Rich, also came with a letter and poem for his Dad. Other
family members of prisoners spoke as did several social justice
activists. We got a rousing, muffied roar of appreciafion from
hundreds of prisoners, as we circled this massive monstrosity. Two
days later, we participated in the October 22nd rally and march
through the Loop against police brutality, amidst a sea of police.
Seven people wers amested, as we dropped a mock coffin
representing the victims of police murder in the middle of State
Street, bottlenecking traffic for several minutes.
Also during this fime, the capitalists met in Chicago and the city
spent nearly $2 milion in @ massive over-reacfion o the
demonsirations it generated. Over two thousand Chicago police
were on hand. Only one demonstrator was arested. the anarchist
Mike Durschmid, @ vegan animal fights acfivist. He was charged
with “cruelty to animals.” The police made their horses wear these
disorienting shields (as they had plans for massive bloodletting and
gassings.) This spooked the poor horses and caused potential

danger fo people and horses, as the police forced them upon the
marchers. Mike, of course, didn't so much as touch a horse. His

The next day, as Food Not Bombs distibuted free food,
q*dangerous anarchist iofers* according fo the rabid mainstream
press,) two women were aiso anested, for riding their bicycles.
All duing these months, many conferences and demonstrations
were faking place ail over the city dealing with the repressive new
Patriot Laws, the impending genocidal bloodbath ia Iraq, fhe rights of
prisoners and 5o forth, of which | went to several of. | aiways bring a
satchel full of various zines, which | pass out freely, even though it
costs me alot of fime, effort and money fo create them. Some kids
ke fo have their feddy bear or doll and some need zines! (smilg)
During the Christmas holiday break, | 100k five days off of work.
This allowed me fime - scheduled amidst all the celebratory chaos -
fo put fogether a 16-paged catalog of the approximately 75 new
zines which | have added fo my distro in the year of my “Ohl Lordil”
2002. Most of these are prisoner zines, including several by and
about women prisoners! My wife's sisters, their husbands ond three
chidren came fo visit from December 23rd through Christmas. We
had a ot of fun falking, socializing and playing games. We played
cards and charades. My most fun was being accepted as a player
by the chidren, aged 5,8 & 10. Hey, Mikeyl They like mel | made
up sil jokes. | Cooked a bunch of food we ate. Ofher people
made junk, fool |got a great present, which | gave to myself. It's
Laura Nyro Livel CD which I've listened to constantly ever since.
Ireceived a cerlified letter from Hanson, which is a national
company specializing in forcing people off of their property for
govemment projects. They were hired by IDOT fo fry and force
“landbanking" down our throats. By law. these letters are sent to
neighbors when they are planning on demolishing homes. My very
next door neighbor's house, was one of two they had decided fo
demolish. IDOT (lionis Department of Transportation) has @ policy
that if a dwelling costs more than 10% to bring up fo code, they
simply demolish it. | thought about this a couple of days, then
decided on a plan of action. As the ever-insightful Lorenzo Komboa
Ervin remarked in Ausfin, “You've got fo raise some fucking issues!”™
Amonth earier, | had privately fongue-lashed a local reporter for
wiiting such a pro-aiport story. 1 was fime fo cail him up, again. |
wrote aletter to the editor and sent it fo all the papers, along with
this Hanson letter. | called this guy up again and fed him some
quotes. Among them were, “Maybe we shouid demolish the Capitol
building.” | aiso said we might stand in front of the home, so the

bulldozers couldn't get fo it. This caused quite a buzz. A pro-aiport
paper even did an editorial specifically about my “strident acfivism™
and thdt they didn't doubt that the Raccoon Grove home razing
was a personal thing. Someone had stood up 10 these bullies - mel
We quickly organized a rally and got a strong confingent of
media - even nationally (A.P. and the Washington Post.) On the
crisp moming of January éth, maybe 150 people and several police
aand media converged on a two-story home out in the “footprint.” It
was a perfect location for an interesfing spectacle. Here rested a
pleasant enough house perched on a hill and five acres of land. As
we held a rally and press conference, with police tape feling us
‘where we could and couldn't be in this “free” society, sure enough
the state went ahead with a pointiess demolition of a 13 year old
house, without even frying fo salvage any of it,in the waning days of
George Ryan's comupt regime! Five billion dollars in debt, having
already wasted $100 on “Peofone,” here they are, reduced fo
vandalzing this house bigtime! as a pathetic parting shot of nasty
‘wastefuiness that has charcterized this corupt landgrab from the
get go. This made a very visual picture in the next day's papers and
ol over the tv that night. We sang songs and made the prima
donna news anchor wait unfil we were finished before we let him
interview us. Itwas a lot of funl We ralsed the issue effectively and
the community responded beautifully. Other people from other
groups came and supported us and brought up many other reasons.

Afew days later, George Ryan announced the pardons of four
innocent deathrow prisoners, including Aaron Patterson, Richard
Flood's boyhood friend. He'd been on deathrow for seventeen
‘years for a double murder he didn't commitl A month earier, the
evil Cook County State's Attomey, Dick Devine, tried fo get Aaron to
cut a dedl. Plead "guilty” and received “fime served." Richard
Flood said, “How in the hell do you get fime served for a double-
murder?" “Innocence"” and “Guilt” mean nothing fo authorities!
At a wonderfully attended meeting of the Justice Coaiifion of
Greater Chicago at the University of Chicago Law School, a film
about the sinister Leiutenant Jon Burge of the 2nd Police District of
Chicago, was screened. He had tortured many people info signing
false confessions, some of whom are stillin prison and "deathrow."
Excuse me, those on deathrow in llinois are now 5o ever so mercifully
“only” on life without parole! Death's probably preferablel The daily
madness excruciation of prison life is the most Hitieresque of all daily
suffering sneeringly forced down the men and women and children
of Amerikkka. When will we no longer tolerate these death dealers?
Burge was never charged with anything and lives on a healthy
pension in Forida, while he runs a “security” outfitin Chicago -
rmanned with black police officers! Clarence Thomasl Go, pukellt
‘Aaron Patterson, among many others, was at this meeting. It was
thilling fo see the drive he possesses fo fight for the freedom of all
the Brothers and Sisters left behind in prison! This,is one Brother on a
serious mission, hel or high water and hey have a figer on the loosel
He's too info it o frifle with sleep or food - just coffee! | spoke as well,
passed out zines and met many, many dedicated activists. A lof of
people spoke. We all didll Our hearts were beatin'l
Slowly, but surely, the movernent fo fight this for-profit punishment
indushy is growing. A spirt of solidarity and commitment is almost
fangible! We should all simply redouble our efforts!
Another interesting action we participated in was a rally at
Operation Rainbow/PUSH in Hyde Park. More and more socially
conscious, activist preachers - pariicularly on the southside, are very
disenchanted with Jesse Jackson [Junior & Senior) and their immoral,
seli-aggrandizing role as “spokesmen’ for the black community.
They see no reason to sign onto the mantra hat the Peotone
will solve all the problems down here, are disgusted by Jesse Senior's
comuption, infidefity-and arrogance and have formed a group
called VOM (Volces of Morallty.) So we exposed them, during their
litle “Founder's Day” lovefest. One brave lady was amested for
laying into these chariatansinside the building. The cops had
forced us across he sreet in fhe cold snow because we were
“blocking the sidewalk." What ajoke! A few ladies wentin and |
quess, got up and laid into those shams.
They dragged her out and fried fo arrest her, as we all wshed over
ond friectto keep this from happening. It was very emotional and
upfront. We were allin eachother's faces! Af one point a cop
starfed threatening fo arrest the guy next fo me, a Reverend, who
‘was being demonstrafive. | screamed, “Look! Jackson's got his own
Pinkerfon'sl” The cop was screaming, “You can't fouch a Police
Officerl It's a felony! I'l arrest youl” See, another new law is, you
can't even touch a cop, while they're say, beating you bloody with
abilly club or whatever the fuck they call them, nowadays!
They kept fryin' o get us fo go back across fhe street. More cops
came. We kept shouling and screaming and demanding that they
let our lady gol Finally! We stopped scening on them long enough
for them to affect their chinsy-assed, bogus amest. We made a
picket line and speakers arliculated a brutal fitany of the Jackson's
phoniness. | bluried out our dissatistaction with Jackson Jr. from the
Country folk viewpoint. They even wondered how was it that only
#wo people made it out of the cordon surounding the murder of
Brother Mariin - Jackson anddies Ewi AAY) A Hard Rain is Gorina Fall &
it'sjust about fime for A New Moming! These men & women were
strong! This particulor event was most thoroughly enjoyablel
A fulkpaged editorial story was printed in the Sunday Sun-Times,
entified, “Shove Comes fo PUSH." It's way past fime for fresh blood
and sfrong new voices! Aogance and system whoring must go!
Inmy neck of the woods (south suburbs) we held an imporiant
meefing of several grassroofs groups fighting for economic, judicial
and environmental justice. A new chapler of Stolen Lives has been
created and a commitment fo create an umbrella group of these
organizations was forged. It will be called something like, “Southside
Cifizen's Alionce." | am on the “Stem Committee” and will help do
much of the argument craffing for this new group. I'm also part of.
the Speakers Bureau. | relish the possibilties of this bold challenge!
1 will make sure that serious prisoner support will be a major part of
the agenda. | feel that basically, what is needed in these desitufe
black suburbs is genuine ground-up cifizen involvement. I'm looking
o basically cib fhe Ten Paints of the Black Panther Party as our
Statement of Purpose, because that is what is needed Black church
groups are involved, which i essenfial. We wan fo deal seriously
with ihe major issues plaguing the black community - racist drug
war, police brutality, economic stranguiation. lack of social services,
youth violence, efc. without the self-serving, ineffective and cormupt
influence of govemment, business or their mouthpieces. If's the

As 'm getling more known for my social jusfice advocacy, I've
had more inferviews. such as a recent (January 91h) story in the
Chicago Reader, which has a circulation of 150,000. It was a sort of
hack job, but what can you expect out of the mainsiream@ Ron
Campbell a witer (Constipation zine) and member of Chicago ABC
was also featured. I've done radio shows and presentations,
tablings and so on. Il speak fo News & Letters on February 3rd
about the Richard Flood case and ofhers and speak at the College
of Complexes, March 15th (the anniversary of when Caesar's
khama finally caught up fo him} on he ABC-Network, for which |
editted the firt zine. Sony o everybody who | pissed off about thatl
I'm sure it sounds fike I'm a shameless self-promoter; but this is my
personal zine and | am exiremely polifically active, all the fime.
Hopetully, people wil see it os an example of what one person can
and does do and seek fo in some way emulate i. If serious anarchist
consciousness mushroomed and my name was never menfioned, I'd
be exalted! I'm certainly not without a personal ego, but what gives
me the greatest safisfaction is seeing other people flower as social
Justice crusaders. | continue to do a ot of nose-to-the-gindstone
prisoner support work (many lefters every day, efc.) | am constantly
‘working on new zines, mainly about the prison abolifion struggle.
On a personal level, my workpiace s being closed the first of ?
March, so | will have 1o transfer, work more, take a pay cut and so
on. Ihad a very sore back for several months, but F'm siowly getling
better. My heatth is unimpressive, as I've been foo driven to act
responsibly aboutit. There's only 24 hours in every day. A big chunk
of my time is sacrificed as a wage-siave and it's daily preparation
‘and winding down. Many, many people know what 'm talking
about. If basically ruins every aspect of our entire lives!
My advocacy is relentless as the fimes compel. My stamina isn't
what it used fo be, as I'm now approaching fifty. We've purchased
anice readmill, @ back brace, an exercise mat and so forth. My
cholesterol is high, but | can't force my kidneys and liver fo be
assaulted by their pills. | infend o be more personally, physically
responsible, but it's tough undemeath ail of the self-generated
responsiilifies and the obfuscation of profi-cliven, adverfised
society. We must all endeavor fo be sensitive fo our own welk-being.
My wife and kids are fine. ‘Our boys got an electric guitar and
amp for Christmas, and are now crankin' out the amplified joms!
Stanton continues fo develop as a talented pianist. It's genvine
heaven on Earth to be serenaded by him, almost nightly. He's
composing songs and surounding himself with sound. He's sucha
beautiful guyl He loves his Cousin's new baby, Loule. His most
freasured moments are getting a chance to hold and cuddle himi
Stephen and | made this fittle car. It's a soap box derby kit for his
Cub Scouts. My jig saw didr't have @ blade, so | just assauifed this
rectangular piece of pinewood with a hammer and chisel. Then we
glopped a bunch of caulk all over it. We painted it biue. Then we
painted a NO AIRPORT symbol (irplane with a circle and siash
through i) and had two frogs ride it bareback! Steohen aiso
painted clouds on the car. Itkinda leans fo one side, but we got the
tres lacked on and it roles across the floor, sorta. I'm sure the SA

Recently, one of our sisters was released Kiisten Brazefton seved
#hree years of a five year sentence for wiiting a few bad checks on

her mother's account. The reason they gave her for such a A
draconian senfence was, “It's an election year!” She'llfight like hel
1o free her sisters and | want everone of you who are in prison right
now who have been somehow able to Idy eyes on this to know fhis!
Rest assured that | for one, will confinue with this relentiess dream
of freedom and truth for however many breaths | have left. |am
foreverindebted fo everyone of you who fight and live everyday
and especially to those who have wiitten fo me and encouraged
me. I am constantly awed by the incredible falent and insight you

Richard Flood Gets “Sentenced” in Rozak’s Courtroom
Joliet, Illinois August 26th, 2002
At the Wll County Fair yesterday, I noticed a sign for “Rozak” for
Will County Board. Is it him? I've been to Rozak's courtroom before.
He's a thoroughly inculcated judicial nazi. He even likes to bully the
bailiffs! He'll trash your cell phove, if it goes off. He maximizes
sentences and fines. He's Richard'a Floods judge - biased as hell and.
totally entrenched. A few days ago, I read in the Chicago Tribune that
e ventenced a repeat DUI to 11 U2 years!

A while back, a motion was filed by Richard to replace him with a
judge who was less biased. It was, of course, quickly dismissed.
‘The main road I took, Route 52, leads directly to the Will County
Courthouse. It dominated downtown Joliet. The Metra stopa a block
away. Silver Cross Stadium is right there, tool Joliet is known for its
‘prisons - Stateville, Joliet, but not much is known or said about Will
County Prison, where Richard has spent most of the last 521 days.
1 had to park several blocks away, for every Monday morning, it's
like the movie “The Time Machine” when the sirens go offt Everyone -
‘the “defendants,” their families and friends, the smarmy suited lawyers,
unctious prosecutors, judges, cops and other workers are filling the
“ourtrooms and halls. A large sign over the railroad viaduct proclaims:

the judge to know somebody “important” was in court, writing and a

The prosecutor tries to label Richard for being forced to go to Tamms,
for "gang activity.". Richard explains to the judge, he was sent to
Tamme because he did political organizing among prisoners and acted
a8 a paralegal for them on their logal cases. He turned the proceedings
on their ear. By his patient, lucid unafraid statements, he was indicting
the system, substituting the prosecutor’s lies for the facta.
Richard’s lawyer did a halfway decent job arguing for Richard,
especially as compared to the “throw the book at him, Judge” arguments
of the prosecutor. The judge mentioned that he has “received
tremendous amount of mail about this case” which he hadn't read. He
said he didn't know if he should have or not, 60 he dida't.
‘Then Richard made his statement. It was a 12 hour long
‘masterpiece! It totally transfixed everybody in the courtroom. Even the
judge was involuntarily mesmerized. A statement this powerful,
passionate and persuasive is rarely heard (or allowed to be heard) in
U.S. courtrooms these days. He totally deconstructed his case, carefully

coolly, yet passionately defended himself and in the process, basically
indicted the prosecution of this case and the whole system in general.
Tlooked over at Rebecca. Tears were streaming down her face

situation, he was confronted with. The judge was at a loss. He said he
would wait two weeks, to give him time to actually read all of these
support letters and maybe thumb through the huge stack of junk the
out-argued prosecutor lugged into court.
So, his sentencing is scheduled for Monday, September 9th at the
9:30 call in Judge Rozaks courtroom. NOW is the time to flood him

George Ryan's Issuance of pardons and/or senfence commutations
for all condemned IL. state deathrow prisoners) the cument “hot

news for prisoners, as we have pondered the conundrum of what are
the grounds upon which so many Americans protest against U.S.
foreign policy while simultaneously acqulescing fo fasclsm here at
home.
The primary misconcepfion that we urge people fo address Is this
notion fhat the criminal jusfice system has somehow “broken down™
and may need fo be fixed. As the castaways of this ultra civilized
soclety, we realize that this Is reformist rhetoric, and If left
unchecked, will only lead to more status quo lip service and not
much In the way of any substantive reform, let alone even begin o
address the possiblity of abolifion.
Any realistic study of the past 500 years of Imprisonment in
America wil Indicate that “The System” is performing exactly the

Television, the movies, video and computer games offer an
unrelenting assault on the senses, glorifying in uniformed
violence, canned-laughter, situational banality and “sexuality”
from titilation to gang rape and other perversions, all
chloroformed over our face with non stop advertisements.
1t's a dying of the human spirit. On an el train, no one talks
to the person next to him. After all, the papers scream about all
of the individual crime. Of course, they never talk about real
crime, official criminals or why things are so hideous, in their ad-
saturated daily rags. They've got some “meat” in it - ultra-
reactionary fascist ideologues, columnists and pundits. They're
paid to cheerlead for American military and economic
monstrousness. People look to the comics for a little insight!
Like the countless people processed into the gulag
warehouses, people are psychologically treated like the animals

Mission Statement:
We feel the elected officials and the business interests
they take their orders from and cater to, have failed the
people miserably - across the southside and around the
country. A “culture of corruption” pervades throughout
Illinois politics, fueled by corporate greed. “Trickie-down™
is a cynical, immoral and racist approach to the solving of
social problems. The economy must become citizen-based!
Genuine solutions can only be successful from the
ground up, as citizens take on the responsibility for the
betterment of their communities.
We face very serious problems - our families and
communities are torn apart by the frenzy to incarcerate
our young men and women. “Living wage jobs” have been
uprooted so greedy corporations can maximize profits off
the backs of poor third world people in Dickenesque
conditions. They bomb whole countries and call it
“humanitarian aidl” George Orwell’s Big Brother” is here!
Many of our fellow citizens are lacking in basic need
fulfiliment, such as adequate housing, clothing, food,
education and love. Despair, hopelessness, apathy and
drug addiction are rampant. The quality of life and the
value placed upon it have dramatically plummeted. The
class divide continues to widen as the rich become super-
rich and the poor becoma destitute.
Clearly, our govenment, the courts, and the economic
system have failed us as the federal government rips up
our civil rights as American citizens and embarks on
genocidal warfare in Iraq. War is forced upon everyonel
Wae are at a crisis situation where the future itself
hangs in the balance. We must embrace humanity as our
own family, and in the spirit of tolerance and love, work
together to solve our common problems, focusing on the
needs of the most desperate, first and foremost!

and asphalt do not equal “progress!” Our children and
their children deserve an unpolluted, natural world to

literature dealing with a myriad of important subjects that
people need to know about, legally and politically.

schooled at the art of psychological manipulation. “War Fever”
grips the country. Ciizens must get and are geftting fogether to
hink of ways of dealing with such a criical, myrlad of problems.
We've created o group called Southside Citizens' Coalition. It'ls
composed of several church groups, community activists, soclal
justice advocates, environmentalists, gang Inferventionists,
grassroots organizers and family members of prisoners and other
supporters. This Is the volce of the CITIZEN! We wilil not be beholden
o the inflence of the polificians or the business community. In how

solutions will emerge from all of us, actual PEOPLE! With that In mind,
we are looking 1o develop community outreach programs that
people really need - like food, clothing, shelter, real education.

SOUTHSIDE CITIZENS’ COALITION
A néw group of experienced social justice advocates has
coalesced from the southside to boldly speak out and begin the
process of implementing desperately needed survival programs.
People from Chicago to Kankakee and Joliet to Gary, have joined
forces! They bring clearsighted energy to take on the problems we
are faced with today. Included are environmental activists, gang
interventionists, religious leaders, political analysts, community
organizers, prisoner supporters and other concerned citizens.
This s the voice from below - from a genuine citizens' point of
view, not beholden to the business community and the corrupt
politicians they manipulate. It's the voice of unvarnished truth!
We are at a crisis situation - on the Southside and around the
world. It demands that people from different communities come
together to fight for our natural rights to freedom, justice and the
flourishing of our families. For, those keeping us down, do not live
in a desert somewhere! There's a war going on, right here at home!
As the Abolitionists of the 19th Century realized, a revolution
thinking and acting is now required to end the modern-day slavery
we see all around us! Destitution and despair will not be tolerated!
A new morality focusing on human worth and mutually supportive
community has stepped forward to battle the evil forces of greed,
racism and oppression. People deservea dignified life without
being menaced by violence, poverty and imprisonment! People
Power is infinitely more rewarding than the idolatry of the dollar!
Come to our mass gathering on Saturday, March 1st, at 9 am.
We will serve breakfast and deal with the grave Issues plaguing our
communities. Several speakers will talk about important issues and
we'll have a wealth of useful information available. Learn and
spread the empowering truth! Come volunteer to help work on
